On my way to a restaurant, I saw graffiti on the side of a building. I noticed there was a private property sign on the fence. The artists, who sprayed these words, resisted against the rules. They probably felt the need to disregard the sign in order to show others their art.

When people think about graffiti, they assume it is gang related, but that is not true in every case. These urban murals can also represent resistance. I and maybe others consider it as a freedom of speech. Graffiti can be used to express their opposition to social and political issues such as racism, climate change, and new laws. Artists around the world used graffiti to bring awareness to these issues. They sometimes create these murals on public buildings which can be illegal. However, many people will walk pass these buildings and see the artist’s feelings on current issues. Resistance is a component in creating these urban art.

Art begins with resistance – at the point where resistance is overcome. No human masterpiece has ever been created without great labor. ~Andre Gide
